The book is set in a village in the present-day district of Hassan, Karnataka, India. The main protagonists of the book are Ajji (Grandmother) and her four granddaughters. A local politician has just inaugurated a Garadi Mane (Gymnasium for Wrestlers), which the granddaughters want to see. But the local boys and the village Sarpanch forbid them and in an argument, Ajji challenges the Sarpanch that her girls will defeat the Sarpanch’s boys in a Mallayuddha competition. The rest of the book contains the lead-up to the competition with a lot of anecdotal references to India’s vibrant culture of Mallavidya and how it has survived today. Along with that, the book also contains research on the various combat arts from all over the world and the cult of Shakti or Devi in India.
